As the future marches on, robots become more advanced, and the world finds itself in need of people to design, build, and fix them. Here at Wicked Uncle, we like to envision a future that’s more Jetsons than Terminator, so we’ve put together our list of our best toys for young future roboticists:

This is the droid you’re looking for:
- Wacky Wigglers
- Robo Bug
- Botley the Coding Robot
- Gizmo – Easiest Pet Ever
- Guardian Bot
- 4-in-1 Robot Kit
- Tumbling Hedgehog
- Solar Hydraulic Robot
- Smartcore 6
If you have a young roboticist just starting out, this is the perfect set. The chunky plastic pieces fit together easily following the color-coded instructions to build one of four different models. Or venture out on your own and Frankenstein the clacking teeth, weird little arms, and various cogs and gears into your own robot monstrosity. Then make your abomination move with motorized power.
This creepy crawler is a great introduction to robot building. The 30-piece kit comes with clear and simple instructions to put the robo bug together and scurry around driven by a motor. It works inside and outside, and comes with a booklet full of bug facts. Plus you can turn the lights off and watch it glow. Simple but satisfying science fun!
For young robot builders with a mind for coding, Botley is the perfect—and adorable—start. This little guy offers a painless introduction to coding by using the included coding cards to program a step by step path. Best of all, Botley is ready to use straight out of the box. You’re it’s programmer, and it’s ready to follow your commands!
For kids who are into robots and want their own pet, you can’t go wrong with this guy. Don’t let his robotic look fool you, Gizmo can learn voice commands and shows emotions just like a real dog. He includes a free interactive app that monitors his health and happiness, and direct controls his tricks. The best part about Gizmo? No need to clean up after him!
The guardian bot kicks off our list of intermediate level robotics because it just does so much. At 14 inches tall, this remote controlled bot is a wonder. Program it to perform up to 50 actions at once; it can walk, talk, move its arms and even dance. Boogie down during the day, then set it to guardian mode at night, and it will vaporize anything that crosses its path… well okay, it won’t vaporize anything, but it’s still a pretty scary little thing.
How can you say no to this adorable little guy? Look how angry! The 4 in 1 Robot kit comes with easy assembly parts, no glue or solder required. The movement is powered by an included DC motor with 3 speed settings. Simply assemble one of the four robots, including the grumpybot pictured above, turn on the motor, and watch your creation move.
Speaking of adorable little robot kits, this one pretty much takes the cake. KIKO.893 has spent a robot life exploring other galaxies, and now it’s coming to your home. Once assembled, KIKO’s six walking legs allow it to turn 360 degrees and negotiate obstacles. It scans its surroundings using its own AI, and can be set to explore or follow you. With its light and sound effects, it’s impossible not to love the little thing.
As more and more robots take to the skies,
As we move into the advanced portion of the list, we turn to our friend, the tumbling hedgehog. We’ve proven on this list that robots can be plenty cute, and this little one is no exception. At 172 piece, this one takes a bit more effort to put together. But once assembled, it has a brilliant sensor that responds to claps. Clap to make it move, rollover, or go to sleep. Spiky fun!
This brilliant kit makes 12 different models that all showcase two forms of clean, alternative energy. The secret is in the included gearbox, which runs on solar and hydraulic energy in tandem, with no batteries! Build a dinosaur, scorpion, forklift and more, then watch as they move around entirely through alternative energy. Truly a robotics kit for the future.
This brilliant set allows you to build one of six land or air remote controlled vehicles. The secret of the whole thing lies within the SmartCore module, which houses a patented algorithm that evaluates the best way to control each vehicle. So you build a vehicle, pop in the module, and the remote is ready to drive or fly whatever you’ve built. It’s ingenious fun.
Our best toys for young roboticists are brilliant, ingenious, and most of all, a lot of fun. If you have a young engineering and coding minded scientist looking at the future, start here. You and your little one will be glad you did. The more fun they have along the way, the less likely they are to build a Terminator in the future.
